VALLEY CITY, N.D. -- During her rehabilitation session Thursday, Sara Gullickson was skipping, lunging and shuffling. Such simple movements seem rather extraordinary when you consider what happened to her just three weeks ago.

Gullickson, 18, was driving on Interstate 94 near Valley City, ND, when she served to avoid a goose. Her car plunged into Hobart Lake, but Gullickson had enough good sense to call her mom from the submerged car.

"She was hysterical and screaming, 'I can't get out, 'I can't get out,'" said Wendy Gullickson, Sara's mother.

Wendy raced to the scene but could only watch as divers tried to rescue Sara from the 32-degree water.

"You feel helpless," Wendy Gullickson said Thursday. "There's nothing you can do."

Sara was underwater for about 30 minutes before rescuers pulled her out. She was in a coma for a week before waking up.

"I barely could walk or anything," Sara said about waking up from a coma. "I could definitely tell I was in bed for a while."

After eight days of rehab, doctors and nurses are more than amazed with her recovery.

"It's a miracle - and that's not a term we use loosely," said MeritCare nurse Karen Benjamin.

Her family said the extreme cold water seemed to shut down all but Sara's most critical functions. That may explain why the damage to wasn't worse.

The family also thinks the lucky penny Sara keeps in her shoe played a role. They even wrote a poem about the magic of that penny, which says, "The penny that's worth a single cent has caused thousands of people to pray, which has made the value of a penny more than we can ever repay."

Gullickson left the hospital Thursday. She doesn't remember anything about the day of the accident.

She's a softball player at Valley City State. She can't play softball for a month or so but hopes to start playing again later this month.
