Huge Underwater Mountain Discovered in Sumatra Indonesia
A potentially powerful undersea mountain or volcano was recently discovered in the island of Sumatra in Indonesia that scientists say could have catastrophic power
A huge underwater mountain or volcano was discovered in Sumatra, Indonesia early this month while scientists were doing research on sea beds and fault lines in Indonesian waters.
Scientists say the underwater mountain could be a potentially catastrophic power. Sumatra is located in the so called ‘ring of fire’ where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.
Yahoo news reports:
The cone-shaped mountain is 4,600 meters (15,100 feet) high, 50 kilometers in diameter at its base and its summit is 1,300 meters below the surface, he said.
"It looks like a volcano because of its conical shape but it might not be. We have to conduct further investigations," he told AFP.
The reports did not say whether the mountain or volcano is active or dangerous as investigations and research by scientists continue.
Sumatra is noted for powerful volcanoes and violent eruptions that killed thousands of inhabitants during the past years.
